CONCERT REVIEW: Air Canada Centre, Toronto (Sun Media)

TORONTO – One thought kept running through my head as I watched neo-soul singer Maxwell struggle through the launch of his North American tour on Friday night at the Air Canada Centre Theatre.

What a difference a year makes.

After putting on one of the best shows of the year in Toronto last October at Massey Hall, Maxwell returned to kick off his first-ever North American arena tour in the ACC’s theatre setup and never looked totally comfortable in the larger setting despite rehearsing in Toronto for the last two weeks.

To be fair, there are almost always technical and production problems at every first show of a major tour so hopefully as Maxwell’s trek continues he will iron out some of the kinks.

But there’s not much you can do, other than cancel, if you lose your voice.

It was clear there were vocal problems early in the show, as Maxwell’s talented ten-piece band, including a three-man horn section, drowned out his voice during his opening older songs, Sumthin’ Sumthin’, Get To Know Ya and Lifetime.

Later the Brooklyn-born singer, who often fidgeted with his earphones, explained his voice was hoarse and he had almost cancelled the show.

Never was the problem more apparent than during what is normally one of his live show’s biggest highlights, a cover of Kate Bush’s This Woman’s Work, which found an eager female fan snuggle up beside him on stage before she was escorted off.

“I’m pretty hoarse tonight,” said Maxwell, after he struggled through the song. “I didn’t think I was going to be on this stage. But I didn’t want to cancel.”

Also problematic was Maxwell’s stage setup with a y-shaped catwalk that brought the sexy, good looking singer closer to his adoring female fans, who he often hi-fived when they weren’t hurling underwear at him, but it never really seemed to suit his fluid dance moves.

Instead, it seemed disjointed rather than complimentary.

And when he popped up and then disappeared from three different areas on the catwalk during the course of one song, it was comical instead of impressive.

Think David Copperfield and you’re getting close.

The show actually began promisingly with a large video screen displaying water imagery as the handsome, and sharply dressed Maxwell emerged into the spotlight to huge applause and screams from his besotted fans.

But as the evening progressed, Maxwell’s bedroom-suitable stage banter seemed beneath a man who has been called a modern-day Marvin Gaye.

It took the singer a good 45-minutes to find his groove, ironically warming up during the new song, Cold, from his first album in eight years, BLACKsummers’night, the first installment in a trilogy of records with the next two scheduled to be released in 2010 and 2011.

Later, as his show came to a close, another new song, Pretty Wings, found white feathers floating throughout the air, and the older encore song, Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder), finally seemed to hit the mark, but by that point, it seemed a little too late for a rally.

Wow…interesting comments. Almost can’t believe this is the same author of the INTERVIEW: MAXWELL? He is a Soul Man (Sun Media). I read some nice comments about the concert via twitter.

All I have to say about last night’s Maxwell concert is A*M*A*Z*I*N*G! I thought he connected extremely well, under the circumstances, and I couldn’t have loved it more. I was a fan from the very beginning and will continue to be one! Thanks so much for bringing your gifted talents to my city! Love love loved it! ~Nadiya~

I was there and unfortunately that article was very true. Common came out strong with a fantastic opening act.. but Maxwell didn’t perform like he normally would. He seemed tired and his voice was definitely out of whack. There was sound problems, the band wasn’t in sync, and they lowered Maxwell’s vocals so you could barely hear him. When you did, his voice cracked… he even sang Till the Cops Come knockin in a super hoarse deep cracked voice.. that sounded really bad.

He should of cancelled because there were people there who paid a LOT of money to see him. When someone practices 14hrs a day for two weeks straight it is almost guaranteed that you would lose your voice. He should of taken some time off before the show. As a tip to him, he should also work the stage more and get rid of some of those cheesy video effects (ie. heart with the candles)… AND he should of performed “Whenever, Wherever, Whatever” that is probably the first show I have ever seen by him where he didn’t perform that song

Its too bad too, because Toronto loves him and he loves Toronto. Max, come back and make it up to us :)

I was at the show last night in Toronto and have to agree with the above review/article. Not Max’s best show (and I’ve seen a few). Not sure if it was just because they need to work out the kinks or if they were really just trying to do too much with the stage antics. Couldn’t agree more with the Copperfield comment. To say it was comical is an understatement. I luv Maxwell though and wish him well on the rest of tour. Would I see him live again? Absolutely.

I WAS THERE AND CAN TELL YOU NO FAN LEFT DISAPPOINTED!!!!

Everyone loved the show, his voice messed up at certain parts but it was still amazing to see him there. He really seemed gracious and excited to be there. I am just glad I was able to attend his first show on his first arena tour.

Amazing Job Maxwell!!!

SHAME ON JANE STEVENSON… If you don’t have anything good to say, keep it to yo’ self!

ish happens! Does anybody get that “Maxwell” didn’t want to disappoint all those people who paid to see him? If he had cancelled then I can’t imagine Ms. Stevenson’s review! It’s a catch 22 situation… And one person’s opinion!

“Maxwell” is ALWAYS A “CLASS ACT” and I’m sure Toronto knows that!…

Wow…
I wonder which is worse, cancel the show or just put the uttermost best even when at your worst? Hopefully he can woo Toronto again, have a feeling Canada will see a lot of him now (jealous) but, its Maxwell, I would pay just to see him smile…

Bama_Gurl September 26th, 2009 at 9:10 pm

Thanks for the article and comments on the 1st show! Personally, I’d rather hear a ‘hoarse Maxwell’ than a cancellation announcement! Esp since I’m flying into ATL for business and will catch the concert with friends while I’m there (I would have to get a refund as I spent a lot of $$ on floor seats). But hey.. things happen! Nothing you can do about it really…. God Bless him and prayerfully he’s better for the show tonight

The writer obviously did not have that great seats. He still put on a Great Performance. Remember he is there to perform for the fan’s not a fan. In your article you failed to mention anything about the other hundreds of people who attended. Please keep your diary to yourself if you are not going to write a well rounded piece. You spoke nothing of the mood and other reactions, which was completely the opposite of yours. Yes, he was hoarse but he is human. Have you never gotten hoarse before? He did it for the fans not the fan. Way to go Maxwell, I did not pay my money to have a cancellation. Thanks.

Although I did not see this performance, I have enjoyed many in the past, as a Maxwell follower; I go way back. Maxwell always delivers a five star performance and humility certainly seems to be embedded into his character. I can only imagine that he struggled with the decision to cancel or to go out there and give it his all.

Given his scheduled performances and fourteen hour rehearsals, this could not have come as a surprise to anyone. As a fan and a SLP, I pray that he doesn’t cause anymore damage to his vocal cords. As for Jane Stevenson, this is still America and she is entitled to her opinion, but that’s all it is; her opinion.

It is allergy season. So the hoarseness is not a surprise. I just hope he does not damage is vocal chords by performing in order not to disappoint his audience.

I think he over worked his voice in rehersals because it is his first arena tour and he wanted it to be perfection.

Since Max is a perfectionist, no doubt they will work the kinks out by the third performance. Keeping my fingers crossed.

That being said, God, could you cut a brotha a break?

I have to disagree with Jane’s review – all negative & no positivity. I was at the concert & although his voice was hoarse & troubled at some points, he still put on a great show. He did sing most of the concert really well & I always prefer live & troubled then voiced over or a cancelled show.

My boyfriend, who is into music like Oasis & The strokes, actually really appreciated the showmanship & even said he was so impressed that he’d like to see Maxwell again next time he’s in town because he appreciates music that’s well done, regardless of the genre.

All the true Maxwell fans understood that it was a great show, perhaps not his best voice, yes, but a true effort & he showed that how much he appreciates his fans by putting his all into it. It’s called integrity.

Don’t worry, Maxwell, your true fans loved & appreciated the show!

I was there. Maxwell should have canceled the show coz his voice was terrible and hoarse and the show did his talents no justice. He’s a singer and his only job is to sing. If his voice was going then maybe he should have had the respect for all his fans who paid $120 and re-scheduled. If I had paid for this I would have been really upset.

The crowd loved him tho and apparently they didn’t care. The end of the show was super awkward when he had the band all introduce themselves. First show of the tour tho so there’s always a few kinks. The voice thing is completely inexcusable.

I went to the Toronto Concert and I loved it. I think the crowd was really into it. Not every performance is going to be flawless but he didnt disappoint me! I am ready for my next Maxwell Concert. I think I am addicted!

Dee~Dee September 27th, 2009 at 11:25 pm

I was there!!! Chrisette Michele and Common were good but Maxwell was amazing, phenomenal, wonderful, rock da house, simple beautiful, mind boggling and at all times orgasmic!!! He has matured so much since his first concert in Toronto at the Phoenix where he humbly sat down and sang to us rather shyly. Today he has the most passionate concerts with so much emotion and authenticity, at all times engaging the audience and making us feel like old time friends! He was very hoarse when he spoke (poor guy!) but it did not affect his singing at all. I am humbled that he chose Toronto to start off his tour. I can understand why. He gets such mad love from us that the energy he gets here only makes him better for the next show!…

Max gives his all, it’s who he is.
Strength, love and infinite blessings,
for Max and all of his loves.

LMN, the same for you.

Camille Johnson September 28th, 2009 at 7:46 pm

I was at the show. Up close…. and loved every minute of it. Yes his voice was not the usual Maxwell, but he could have stood there all night and not say a word it would have still been all good!!!Maxwell is the man!!
