CONCERT REVIEW: MAXWELL Croons, Ladies Swoon at Charlotte Concert (Charlotte Observer)

Clad in a black suit and dark shades, Maxwell gave thousands of screaming ladies exactly what they wanted Tuesday – a sensitive brother who would love them always.

The sultry singer pulled off a surprisingly strong performance at Time Warner Cable Arena. It wasn’t an easy feat, considering his five-album catalog is mostly comprised of love songs. Maxwell sings songs that set the stage for romantic evenings and wedding vows.

He made those candlelight songs fill the spacious arena with his soaring falsetto, a full band, which included a Chester native, and screaming fans. He gave songs such as “Sumthin’ Sumthin’ ” and “Lifetime” energetic arrangements to accompany his smoldering falsetto. Maxwell didn’t simply coo into the mic. He played with it, held it in the air so the audience could be heard as they sang with him.

The arena’s lower bowl was full, and much of the floor was taken up by the stage. It jutted out from the main stage into a wishbone. Fans stood around the edges of the stage trying to touch any piece of the singer as he slid, danced and sauntered past.

Maxwell turned the stage into his private living room and all 8,000 or so fans were at home with him. Gone was the too-sexy-to-get-down Maxwell who played Ovens Auditorium in 2001. Instead, he was playful and comfortable with his status as a sex symbol.

He sang old favorites, such as “Fortunate” and “Get to Know Ya” as well as “Cold” and “Fistful of Tears” from his best-selling new album “BLACKsummer’s Night.” He gave his hit single “Pretty Wings” star treatment, letting each word, each wrong and each heartache linger. When he finished, he murmured “I love you” and walked off stage. Fans yelled for more.

During the performance, which lasted nearly two hours, Maxwell switched his moods. Sometimes he was like a teenage boy. He flirted and grinned sheepishly. Other times, he channeled Prince. He dropped into splits, thrusted on the floor and on the mic stand, and talked dirty.

Even when Maxwell was being dirty, he was still a gentleman. At one point he asked screaming fans, “Am I being too nasty for you?”

Maxwell was in the Queen City last night and never do I expect anything less than the best from him. That and more was given. Although some of the best songs he cannot sing because of time is a little painful. I knew he heard me yell out WheneverWhereverWhatever. All and all, I thank you for that fantabulous performance and if money wasn’t an issue I would be on my way to Chicago, Houston, St Louis. Love You and what you do. Thanks for stopping by. We enjoyed your spirit, which is beautiful onstage.

You can copy cds from the internet, but you cannot duplicate a live performance! The show was hot…the vocals, the band were on point the entire night. Coming from a man, this was probably the best concert I’ve been to. Maxwell has a swag that brothas can appreciate. My girl and I thoroughly enjoying ourselves and would gladly go see Maxwell perform again!

One more thing, it was obvious that he enjoys & loves performing. He thanked the audience numerous times. Everyone could see that he loves his craft and is appreciative of his fans.

I am soooo disappointed!! I bought a ticket (paid $148.00) had a good seat and I missed the concert! I was thinking the concert was today Wednesday and not Tuesday!!! I found out today at my Salon visit (I was getting “cute” for the show) and I didn’t realize I had missed the show. Words can’t express my disappointment!

Tuesday night was simply awesome! I had the pleasure of seeing Chrisette and Common in more intimate settings before, and they didn’t disappoint in the bigger venue. Max called Chrisette “the future of sound,” and I totally agree. Her voice makes me think I’m in a jazz lounge, church and club all at the same time. (I hope that makes sense.) I wish she had more than 30 minutes to show her stuff, because I don’t recall her singing anything from the first album.

What can we say about are caramel delight, Common? He possesses everything I love about Hip Hop: a cool swag, great lyrics and the ability to move the crowd. His medley of Hip-Hop hits was on point. He made the young and old dance to the classics from Notorious B.I.G. and Camp Lo, then he’d hit us hard with The Neptunes-produced “Universal Mind Control.” And he must take Bilal with him wherever he goes. A little taste of “Soul Sistah” was the perfect set up for Maxwell.

But we had to wait 45 minutes until Max came out. When I finally heard Petey Pablo’s North Carolina anthem, I readied myself to see Maxwell in all his glory.

His tall, slender frame descended the stairs, and it was on. First of all, I can’t believe how much he reminds me of Marvin Gaye. Secondly, Maxwell is so personable. I felt as if I was in Maxwell’s living room, as Tonya Jameson states in her review. He has an uncanny ability to make everyone seem important — on the floor, to the sides, on the balcony.

Then, I love the way we works the stage. Maxwell danced all around the stage and showcased his extraordinary band by moving them around, having them dance and letting La Tina get some shine during “No One.” The band was pure fire, just hot lava. The sound of live horns never gets old. Maxwell takes advantage of the bigger venue with the screens and Y-shaped stage extension. The graphics blended so well with the music.

What I loved most of all, is his appreciation for the audience. He was noticeably hoarse and needed our help with the high notes. We were more than happy to oblige. He constantly thanked the crowd for bringing a Brooklyn boy to North Carolina, he fed every woman’s fantasies when he talk about painting toes and satisfying our,… um, needs, and he gave the fellas some love, basically setting them up for some post-concert festivities.

Maxwell is the quintessential soul brother. Seeing him live has deepened my love for his artistry. Thank you, Maxwell, for sharing your talent with us. We are so lucky.

I can not wait to see him on the 23rd in Baltimore. I’m flying in all the way from Dallas beceause I missed out on good seats to see him here, but lucked out on 4th row center in B’more. This will make the 6th concert since he came on the scene that I’ve been too and I’m looking forward to many more!

I attended the show in Charlotte and all I can say is it was amazing. Would love to do it all over again. I enjoyed Chrisette, and Common was awesome, he took me back with the old school hip hop. Great performances by both. But the man of the hour, maxwell, did his thang! Even though he was hoarse he gave us his all and you can’t ask for anything more. The band was awesome, loved hearing Cold and Gravity Pushing to Pull live, sound was great. Wish I could make my way to Baltimore :) .

I just happened to google my brother, Timbali Cornwell and read the review for the 10/7 Charlotte concert. I am wondering who wrote that review. Yes Timbali was born in Chester, SC, and you may know our first cousin, Michael Saunders formerly at WPEG in Charlotte. You can send a response to my email and I will make sure Timbali reaches out to you. Thanks
