FEATURE: An Amazing Concert Experience! (Concert Review)

The following is a review from theBLACKsummersnight tour MAXWELL featuring Chrisette Michele and Common w/Bilal in Dallas, TX at the American Airlines Center October 12, 2009. Enjoy!

The crowd was pretty heavily populated with couples, a lot more men and of course the single ladies were in attendance. When I arrived Chrisette Michelle was finishing up her set with “Fragile”, her set must have been short because we did not arrive that late.

Next up, Common, who ROCKED the house with old school Hip-Hop finishing up with “Universal Mind Control”. Bilal was on stage with Common and accompanied him on some songs. Common performed a little pop and lock and did some break dancing. He kissed one of the ladies in the audience on the lips and took a sip of someone’s Margarita which I found funny. His DJ was off the hook! Loved Common’s freestyle about Dallas, too. The young lady sitting next to me, said she didn’t know much about Common but she was now a fan.

There was about a 40 minute intermission, while they broke down Common’s set and prepared for Maxwell. His performance began around 9:50 p.m. I had been worried about my seats which were on the floor to the right of the stage (my right, his left) but as fate would have it, the seats were about one row back from where the Y stage intersection. So, he was front and center and in my face ALL NIGHT LONG. Thank you, Jesus!

He wore a black suit, black shoes, a white shirt with black around the shoulders and a white tie. About 20 minutes into his performance, the jacket and tie were gone. But during one of his disappearances underneath the catwalk, he emerged with a black vest over his white shirt.

Max worked for his money last night, dancing, doing splits, working those hips and the catwalk. He did his version of the stage dive early in the program, running and gliding backwards into the catwalk, landing a about 12 feet away from me, on my side of the stage. Let the frenzy began! So close, yet so far!!

Of course, throughout the performance there was the usual banter about the women being so fine in Dallas, asking, “What is in the water?”, about him seeing a little of Dallas on his run that afternoon on Maple Ave. He must have stayed at the Crescent Hotel?

His set included “Loving You”, “Fistful of Tears”, “Sumthin, Sumthin”, a slower version of “Simply Beautiful” (yeah, slower than usual), “Fortunate”, “Playing Possum” (Hod and LaTina played guitar, Keyon Harrold on Trumpet), “This Women’s Work” which he free-styled into a political statement about the war in Iraq, Healthcare, the soldiers, and President Obama (loved it!). Oh, let us not forget “Til The Cops Come Knockin’”, my, oh my, oh my, Max worked it!! If anyone can remember more of his set list please post.

Of course, he ended with “Pretty Wings”, after he left the stage, the audience must have applauded, cheered and screamed for what must have been about six minutes before he took the stage again to perform his anthem “Ascension”, which started out in a capella then into the full version with singing, a pretty loooong version.

He was cheesing so hard during “Ascension,” the girl in front of me said, “Oh my God, that smile, he is soooo beautiful,” I patted her on the arm and said, “I understand, baby, I understand.” When he walked down the catwalk passed us she rubbed his leg, looked at me and said, “I had to.” At the end, he was having such a good time it was almost as if he did not want to leave. Honey, he didn’t check his watch once during the entire performance. Thanks, Max!

Finally, the band came out onto the catwalk, introduced themselves, Max introduced himself gave a little speech, said goodnight and that he loved us. I got a hand shake and a hand slap. Alas, no kiss. Still, it was an amazing performance and a wonderful night. I’m still feeling the buzz.

Wish I could have been sitting where you were last night! I was wondering if any LMN or MFF’s were there! I am still on that natural high at work today!

Thanks! Great review! I love reading everyone’s experience at the various venues. I’m in Austin and I ‘thought’ about going to the show in Dallas or to Houston 2night but I caught the show last week while visiting ‘da A’. I do have a friend that’s driving there 2nite tho’ (I have been pimpin Max across the nation ;) ).

I don’t know if Maxwell truly knows how his presence & music (as well as the BAND’s) positively impacts people. ‘This Woman’s Work’ (from ‘MTV Unplugged’ not the studio album versions but shout out to Kate Bush) touched me back in college as it reminded me of my ‘college crush.’ We never hooked up but I had ‘those feelings’ that just would not go away, but we are life long friends. I always think of him when this song comes on… always! He’s currently serving in Iraq, so when Max stopped singing TWW and started talking about the war in Iraq, I was literally GONE and fell down in my seat! I cannot describe how awesome I felt though! Max definitely opens you up emotionally and that’s RARE! esp with me…

Oh yeah, just curious, what local song did Max play before he started his set @ Dallas?

Erykah Badu’s Honey

Bama_Gurl October 13th, 2009 at 1:56 pm

Thanks Pam!! I figured it would be Badu … just didn’t know which song. He played T.I.’s ‘Whatever You Like’ in da A.

OMG, reading all these reviews, I cannot wait until Baltimore on the 23rd! I just hope my seats are as good as yours were. I paid out the wazoo, but he is so worth it!!!

WHAT MORE CAN I SAY!!?? The review submitted was wonderfully written. But I’m sure, just as everyone that attended and has seen him perform, will agree that it’s SO HARD to capture that experience in words!! I TOO was there at the concert, here in Dallas, TX…had a floor seat, right next to the stage! MAXWELL WAS BREATH-TAKING!! HE LITERALLY TOOK MY BREATH AWAY!! As soon as I heard “Phoenix Rise” and all the special effects, awaiting him to hit the stage…OMG! I was literally GONE!! When he hit the stage in his GORGEOUS tailored, and sophisticated suit, white tie, dark shades…I was blown away! I was shaking….couldn’t control myself. And when I got to touch his hand, and rub his leg….I almost passed out, I cried. His voice was PERFECT….so SILKY….there’s absolutely NOTHING about this show that was not PHENOMENAL!! His smile was like HEAVEN….

And just to feel his presence, his humble spirit…it’s almost as if he was near tears just taking in how much we love him, and just singing along with him on EVERY SONG…we all BEGGED him not to leave us!! And seeing how he gave honor to his BAND…THEY ARE REMARKABLE MUSICIANS!! All of them, as a group, are so special, and so enlightening.

The special effects, the lighting, the atmosphere was so “grown and sexy.” And yes, he took it THERE…on a very sensual level…kept it real classy….he even said “WHAT’S IN THE WATER DOWN HERE IN DALLAS TX!!?? YOU ALL ARE SOME OF THE SEXIEST WOMEN I’VE EVER SEEN!!” I nearly lost my mind….Seeing how he would cascade, and glide so lightly on his fit….moving his hips everyway possible….how he would get so DEEP into his singing that he would close his eyes so tightly…..how he would rub his head, and touch on himself as he got into the end of “Bad Habits”….as he sung “I can’t control the feeling….”….OMG!! I’m nearly in tears as I type this.

One AWESOME performance was when he sung “Playing Possum.” We all know how heartfelt that song is…and he sung it like an ANGEL….I cried the entire time with my hands in the air!! And the feathers coming from the ceiling, as he ended with “Pretty Wings” was…wowww!! He definitely took us to another place…all I saw was HIM….and he came back, after we PLEADED for him to stay…and capped that night off right, starting acapella, singing “Ascension.” HE ROCKED THAT ARENA LIKE NO ONE HAS EVER DONE IT!! I can still see his gorgeous face, feel his soft hands, and “hard” thighs! (yes, I rubbed his thigh and leg as he kneeled down)

I truly thank God for “My Maxwell Experience.” This was my first time ever seeing him perform, and it was MIND BLOWING! I have so many good shots and video clippings, it’s unreal! And I was so saddened to see him go….I wanted to go with him, I could have stayed even longer rocking with him all night long!

And Chrisette Michele and Common Featuring Bilal Ali were a TALENT in their own right! They did AMAZINGLY WONDERFUL!! Chrisette has such a powerful voice, star presence, “diva style”…her voice reminds me of the late great Phyllis Hyman….she RIPPED IT! And Common is just a HUGE BALL of energy….love his flow, his swag, his intelligence, his cockiness, his voice, his style…he’s so real and down to Earth. He even gave a lot of credit to Erykah Badu, and “free-styled” about Dallas and special areas and streets about the city that was mind-blowing!

So as you can see, I gave a brief of that night, I can’t begin to capture that entire night in words. Maxwell would disappear by going “under” the stage, and re-appear at another part of the stage….so much dancing and “positive” energy, that it overwhelms your soul!! I love Maxwell to the core, and I will forever support him, and his craft, and have SO MUCH respect for how humble he is! God is awesome, and he definitely lives in this man like never before! I just thanked Maxwell for obeying God’s voice, and giving us a piece of him as he does in every note he sings, every song he sings….and it’s “refreshing” to hear him give God the glory for it all….(yes, he took us to CHURCH as well)…All those that are about to see him in your city, don’t you worry about a thing…just get ready to be on your feet all night long! Even if you don’t have a floor seat as I did right by the stage, EVERY SEAT IS A GOOD SEAT WHERE MAXWELL PERFORMS!! Get ready for a mind-blowing, electrifying, soulful, exciting night like never before!

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the reviews. First off let me say that I saw him back in the day when he first started out. He came to Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. He was still very shy and maybe a little rough around the edges but the concert went really well. I loved his Urban Hang Suite and just had to see who this guy was. I have admired him for a long time but as he stayed away longer and longer I always wondered about him and prayed and hoped that he was OK. You know, just taking a break. He never seemed like the kind of performer who wanted a lot of attention. Just knowing and seeing how shy and humble he was let me know that he wasn’t down for all the Hollywood hype. I really admire that about him. However, I knew he was too talented to leave the music industry forever.

So to my surprise he appears on the BET show and wow – I’m thinking boy, he’s back. He cut the hair – which I’m OK with – it’s just hair. And he sounds so good and looks fine as ever but he’s growing in a mature man!! Then I start to hear the new CD and I really like Pretty Wings. I go and purchase the CD and I start loving Bad Habits (especially after the video comes out). Using Kerry Washington in the video was a great idea. I love her, she’s gorgeous and they look so good together. And I’m feeling Stop the World and Help Somebody and I’m playing the CD all day at work and on the way home. I love the toned-down feel of Possum Playing.

I got tickets to the show in Washington, D.C. – paid a small fortune but I had to see him. I knew I just couldn’t let him come to D.C. and not wish him well with my presence. My seats were OK but there were these giant speakers in the ceiling about 60 feet in front of me and the sound was deafening. So I can’t say that I totally enjoyed the concert – but not because of his performance – only because the sound was soo incredibly loud that I physically couldn’t enyoy it. I had my fingers in my ears the entire concert.

However, his performance was fantastic!! He glided across the stage, he smiled, he did those love push-ups, he fell backwards and just laid out on the stage. He was so heart felt and loving. He sang all the songs I wanted to hear and I got so filled with emotion that I put my hands over my face so I wouldn’t cry. My husband went with me and, of course, that’s like taking sand to the beach. Plus the fact that he just doesn’t understand my love jones for Maxwell. But he is the receipient of a lot more loving since I became addicted to Maxwell. And I tell him all the time – “you need to thank Maxwell for this!” But I just couldn’t lose it like I wanted to, like my emotions were begging me to.

I think the large video screens were a true stroke of genius. Whoever had the idea to use those should get a bonus, a raise and an award. They were magnificant – everytime I really couldn’t see him (we were in the balcony) I could look at the screens and tell where he was or see that incredible smile. I loved how he chose songs from all the CD’s – pretty much his entire music catalog and the way he used each side of the stage as well as the catwalk – which I think was another incredibly smart idea. Never seen a catwalk in a concert before. Just incredible!!

Like someone else wrote, I loved how he introduced the band and the background singer. He truly poured his heart out and mentioned his upbringing in New York – said that his career and life were an “American Dream.” That he never throught this would ever happen to him. He thanked us for coming out and said we had made him a “sweaty mess” and that he had to go and take a shower. I went home sooooo happy. My husband still doesn’t “get it” but again – he got the cookie so he got paid for sitting through the concert.

I think it was the best concert I’ve seen since the last time I saw him in the 1990′s. His was the last concert I had been to. I’m older so I’m sort of “concerted out.” I don’t think there are too many artists I haven’t seen so now I’m pretty picky with my limited funds. I had just been waiting for Maxwell to return and I was royally rewarded. I’ve already paid another small fortune to see him again in Baltimore. This time with my sister (who was supposed to go with me in D.C. but had to have surgery). My seats are much better this time and I intend to scream, shout and cry at will. I will try not to reach out and touch him, but I will damn sure wave, take photos and sing along. I will probably be an emotional wreck after it’s over but that’s OK.

I love Maxwell. His humility, his attitude, his voice, his presence, his outlook on life. It seems like his mom and grandmother did an excellent job in raising a fine black man with heart and humility. He is the truth and the breath of fresh air I’ve been waiting for in the music industry. Finally, I know he’s said many times that he just wants to get married and have some kids. In that case, I wish him the love of a good woman, fat, healthy babies and a home filled with love.
