…Well, Saturdays Can Be Smooth Too! (Videos)

Usually, the smoothness is reserved for Sundays…well, Saturdays can be smooth too! Last night MAXWELL played at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, CA and he did his usually, “get you dirty, dirty, dirty clean you up and get you dirty again” MAXWELL thing to a crowd of thousands. Over 8 years ago, a friend of LMN’s saw Sade at the same venue but they did not get the chance to see Maxwell. Next time for sure.

Check out these videos from last night’s concert. The stage set-up looks gorgeous from what can be seen in the videos. And Stop the World would be just the perfect song to hear in a cappella! And uh…okay MAXWELL. I know he ate before he did the concert. Maybe he just couldn’t resist a snack of under-garment proportions while on stage? Enjoy the videos!

I’m sure this will be an unpopular opinion, but as a longtime fan of Maxwell and his music, I am disappointed in the over the top sexual nature of these recent shows. He has always carried himself with a maturity and grace that was heads above other performers, and now it seems like he is sinking to the lowest common denominator with these raunchy performances. If that’s where he is at now, I guess that is where he is at…though it hurts me to say I can’t hang with him anymore if that is the case.

I’m chiming in with Pine. Last year I was informed about some risque things maxwell had said during his performance at the Shrine but this has to be the most tasteLESS scene I have EVER seen performed him. – Video #2 at 2:40 to the end. Why? WHY? This is called PROSTITUTING your art to an extreme.

Maxwell you are NOT stupid but this is not even cute, it is disgusting.

I’ve been loyal in supporting his work for a long time, blogged about him, encouraged others to *scrobe* his music into the last.fm software for him to have 1,000,000 plays which he did get but this crosses the border and my value system to the top.

May God bless him in whatever it is he is going through. I’m praying for him but this is REPULSIVE!

Watching Maxwell on You tube has become my favorite past time. He’s such a consummate performer. His fan base is so unique; he has women from their late teens to their 50′s at his shows and he works so hard to make sure each and every woman feels like they have been on a date with Maxwell. I want that level of eroticism from Maxwell. That grown-man confidence is attractive and appealing.

Stophurt October 18th, 2009 at 10:56 pm

I truly understand how some can find Maxwell’s performances overly sexy, for me this is fine but what I do not understand is if you have been a Maxwell fan from the beginning this man has always oozed sexiness if you remember Cococurious (Luxury Cococure) or Let’s Not Play the Game, this man is showing you who he is and now at 36 he’s letting you know why pretend and hold back? I personally find it freeing to see someone so comfortable with themselves to express. “Hey! This is me and this is what I do, what I like and this is where I am in my life.” Maxwell is erotic, sexual, and just plain beautiful. I guess this is the difference between a Kirk Franklin show (Much love & respect) and a Maxwell show. Once again, I respect everyone’s opinion especially if that is not the way as a fan you view MAXWELL the artist.

Thanks All! I love reading everyone’s views on things. At the end of the day, his music is still beautiful and speaks to your soul. I never saw him in the 90s, so I will have to youtube old performances. But I think that’s where the whole ‘celebrity thing’ comes to play. We only know “Maxwell the Artist” and not necessarily ‘Maxwell the Man’ behind the music (not saying that he’s not true to his art or that his music isn’t coming from a real place). So, raunchy behavior maybe a shocker to some. You can quote any artist’s bio/articles/interviews and memorize their Wiki pages, but it still doesn’t mean you truly know the person. I mean the morning breath, ashy, chapped lips, didn’t let down the toilet seat, didn’t brush his hair or take a shower “person”. Some may picture him having rose petals 24/7 but we have to realize that ‘roses really smell like boo-boo’ ;) …thank U Andre 3000!

He’s revealed a lot about himself as of late, but a fan cannot perceive to literally “know” him. If u do, then hook a sista up with a dinner and dancing (that’s all I want) lol!. I’m just now getting his older albums (sans MTV Unplugged) and the music has always had sexual undertones. Apparently, he enjoys and/or enjoyed a very healthy and active sex life as he got older and now it’s being projected freely during his tour (where pretty much anything goes, you def wont see this on TV!). I can understand why some would be disgusted though, but I’m not. At the same time, I’m not co-signing his ‘snacking’ just accepting it for what it is. I do respect your opinions as they were stated honestly and respectfully. To me, he is simply being himself. I’d rather one show me their true colors now, then to be disappointed by their faded glory later….

@ STOPHURT…Very well stated. I could not have said it better myself. Much love to Maxwell keep on doing what you’re doing and Thanks for the fantasy!

I appreciate everyone’s differing opinions. I’ll just add a few things in response.

1-Yes, Maxwell and his music have been sensual from the beginning. But I find his most recent performances more sexual, and graphic, if you will, than sensual. I certainly haven’t seen every show, but in the early days, I don’t recall all the gyrating/panties/bedroom talk. Maybe I missed something, but I went to shows back before the hiatus and didn’t experience that….For me personally, that is where I am left feeling uncomfortable and turned off. Everyone has a different level of comfort with these things, and that is fine. For every person with my sensibility, he’ll probably gain another a fan with a different one.

2-I don’t know Maxwell as a person and am not even interested in that. His life/personality is his business, and I’m not judging him. I was only expressing my perspective, as a fan of his music and performance, a disappointment with the concert performance referenced. Again, just my personal perspective, but I think he is so talented…great ear, interesting writer, beautiful voice… I hate to see his music become a cliche of sex, sex, sex.

Purplecharm October 19th, 2009 at 8:28 pm

Max’s dirty talk does make me blush but it doesn’t bother me. Actually, it turns me on…hahaha. But you have to understand that I am a big Prince fan and it doesn’t get any dirtier than Prince…lol. I see so much of Prince in Maxwell now than ever before. You can tell that he has incorporated him into his performance…dance moves, humping the mic stand, sexy talk, etc. Max is probably in a different place from when he first started out. I think he was a late bloomer. I mean, if you read some of his earlier interviews, he talks about how extremely shy and quiet he was as a child and how he went through puberty late (not getting facial hair until I think 19).

Even now he talks about how he couldn’t even get a date when he was in high school. I mentioned his childhood because I think when he came on the scene, he sung/wrote songs that were very mature and sensual for his age, but probably did not have a whole lot of experience with dating. He was more in touch with his feminine side and it shows in his lyrics…but during his eight year hiatus, he probably had the opportunity to explore his manhood, so now we are seeing a different side of him. Although his performances are showing a raunchy side the public has never seen, his lyrics are more tamer. I mean, Bad Habits is about as sexual as it gets when it comes to BSN. None of us stay the same.

sharon October 19th, 2009 at 10:14 pm

I see Maxwell as a very deep and intensely shy person, but he is the ultimate performer. I can’t lie I love all the dirty talk at the concerts.

Again, I agree with Pine.

We are ALL entitled to our opinions but I’m going to get this out in the open as to how a minority of people like Pine and myself feel.

Entertainment is subjective. Music, visual art, dancing, poetry, etc. is personal to all of us and we interpret it in different ways.

What intrigued me about maxwell’s music when I first learned about his work in 1996 was that it was earthy, soulful but also it had an alternative rock edge that I enjoy.

I listen to music in a variety of dimensions. I’m constantly interpreting how an artist brings in certain sounds, feelings and depth to my senses. I don’t think sex sex sex all the time when I listen to maxwell’s music. My mind is in an altered state where I am able to focus and concentrate on whatever I am doing such as finance work, abstract art work and technological work.

When an artist entertains, I expect an artist to have a certain standard of how they want to present themselves to the world. I hope that an artist is able to be adored by everyone. Even if there is a slight sexual undertone in an artist’s work, if it makes you think outside the box without being too explicit then I’m okay with it.

However, when an artist visually shares exactly what they want you to interpret from their work in a pornographic nature (this is my opinion) which is delicately flinging the strings of lace thong through your fingers and placing your tongue on the crotch area of a thong, it makes me uneasy, queasy and very uncomfortable. I never expected maxwell to do something this tasteless and crude in a public forum at one of his shows. It made me think I was looking at the Hustler channel & not something that could be seen in the mainstream. My standards for his work have been too high after reading his blog on myspace and following him on twitter.
Even his recommendation of wax poetics magazine was a blessing for it gave me a view of music writing that I have been craving!!

I don’t know him personally but through his art. He’s human. I assume he has his quirks like any of us may have.

Last year, he did He irked me when I heard & saw on youtube that he said in concert in Los Angeles, “who is wet and who wants to be on top.” Supposedly he humped the stage while doing this. Yep, he was explicit there too (in my opinion).

BUT, no matter how sweet and kind he maybe in his real persona, I’m not down with crotch licking artists on stage when I may have paid over $300 for a ticket.

Maxwell was one of the FEW soulful artists I have been following LOYALLY since they have debuted. Now, I’m seeing his evolution is going somewhere else.

And if you use this *grown and sexy* phrase to describe his music why don’t you add to his description that a parental warning is suggested for his concerts for it may break down to something that is sexual in nature.

Do you think Maxwell would perform like this in front of President Barack Obama & MIchelle Obama? I hope not.

For those people who have supported maxwell continue to do so. I blogged so much about him for the past two years that now my voice is mute.

rushay October 21st, 2009 at 12:47 pm

Complete crap that artist would resort to selling sex instead of music, and kids here in south africa would end up looking at him as a hero!

Stophurt October 22nd, 2009 at 12:42 am

Wow! I think sometimes we view artists as beyond human especially Maxwell. He is just a man. I don’t know him personally but I’m pretty sure if he thought he made anyone uncomfortable at his show he probably would not want you to waste your money and come to a concert that some individuals find vulgar.

@STOPHURT… Feel you!………………… :)

SOMETIMES PEOPLE HAVE ULTERIOR MOTIVES FOR WHAT THEY SAY AND DO. (IT COMES WITH THE TERRITORY.)

We loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Maxwell!!! :) :) :)

P.S. DARKNESS HAS TO GIVE WAY TO THE LIGHT!

MAMA October 27th, 2009 at 12:41 pm

I think its DEAD WRONG – to accuse someone of having an ulterior motive because they speak up for what they feel is right or to even question their love for Max!

Now for my Maxfam who know me……I’m all for the grinding, humpin’, sweatin’, pumpin’ and baby-making! But, that doesn’t mean I don’t respect the feelings of others and surely don’t compare their feelings to Darkness! I wish Max would come to my neck of the woods and let me be the judge of his raunchiness!

Thanks for another good article LMN!
