Concert review: Maxwell at 1st Mariner Arena

Midnight Sun contributor John-John Williams IV was at Maxwell’s show last night at 1st Mariner Arena. Here are his thoughts:

Maxwell ended the American leg of “The BLACKsummer’snight Tour” last night at First Mariner Arena in Baltimore, and he left it all on the stage. The neo-soul crooner sure knows how to leave a crowd satisfied.

Maxwell’s “BLACKsummer’snight” was one of the most anticipated albums of this year — and for good reason.

After all, the Brooklyn native was one of the main artists along with Lauryn Hill who became the face of the neo-soul movement of the mid-to-late ’90s. Sure, there have been tons of suitors since then — Anthony Hamilton, Raheem DeVaughn, and even the uber-successful John Legend. But none have been able to knock Maxwell off of his often vacant throne …

While crooners like Legend have been a little bit more subtle in their songs about love making — he sure was during his performance a couple months back at Merriweather Post Pavilion — Maxwell all but slaps you in the face with it.

What amazes you about Maxwell is that he is such a sensual showman. Who knew? Maybe that’s something he has developed during the eight-year hiatus since his last album “Now.” READ MORE

Yes I did go. He seemed to be in such a good mood. He did a lot of audience participation, more so than he did in the one I went to in Richmond. It was absolutely amazing even though I wasn’t on the floor this time, I could see all the nuances I didn’t before. Thank you Maxwell a million times.

Tonight was an amazing night for me! I saw Maxwell in Philly on Oct. 3rd with my girls, had an awesome time and was on a high for about two weeks. I really wanted to see Maxwell in Baltimore but thought let me be grateful I got to see Maxwell once this year I will see him next time he goes on tour. But tonight my husband surprised me with tickets to see Maxwell in B-more!

This gift meant so much to me as you all can imagine. Even though i saw Maxwell 20 days ago it felt like a totally different show. I gained a whole new respect for Maxwell as a performer and was reminded that I have the best husband ever.

Thank you Maxwell. Many blessings to you and your band on the rest of the tour…can’t wait to see you again.

Peace, Love and Balance,
Malkia

Yes, I did go and it was beautiful! You know Maxwell is a very sensitive person and his performance was a response to the fantastic vibrations that the Baltimore crowd gave out last night. He talked to everybody, most especially to single ladies. For all the single ladies like myself who came alone to see Maxwell, hope you guys are feeling as empowered as I am right now. Give yourself a big hug, knowing that you deserve to be spoken to and treated the way Maxwell did last night, and believing that if we feel good about ourselves and really love ourselves, we will attract our soul mate. Maxwell, thank you for that refreshing and enlightening experience. God bless you, baby!

Chrisette, you go girl, do your thing!

Common, You were really great, my first time seeing you perform. My birthday is coming so I knew exactly what was going on in sista Scorpio’s head. You bad boy you! All the best.

Maxwell did his thing and gave us 100% plus…!
I think I was ‘hypnotized’ for a while there! Blessings and much love on the overseas circuit.
Chrisette, gotta get the CD…applause!
Common, thoroughly entertained.
Maxwell took a while to get back, but he’s definitely back!

I was there in Baltimore on Friday with my sister. Both she and I had our moments with Maxwell. We were at the center of the stage right in front of the Y section first row. During his song Ascension, my sister gave him a towel with the words Highest of the High on it and he wiped his face with it and gave it back to her. Then, he came to me with his hand reaching out to shake, and I slipped him a Breast Cancer Awareness pin. Maxwell stepped back looking into his hand and then realized what I had given him and the sincere look on his face was just priceless, and he thanked me, then proceeded in putting on the pin right there in the middle of his show. That will be a moment I’ll NEVER forget. And to top it off he sent me a tweet, (u know who u are if you gave me this). Maxwell, if you see this. THANK YOU SO MUCH. fccmelanie@snet.net

This was my first concert ever. I had a blast! I always liked Maxwell. He is so talented and sexy. He lights up the stage and gives much love to single ladies. Next time he is in Bmore, I will be front row. I cannot get enough of hearing his CD in my car.

The show in B-More was phenomenal! The band, Chrisette, Common and Maxwell were all so amazing! As Maxwell put it, “B-more was throwing it back” but Max was putting it down good, he killed! I was bewitched by this performance two weeks later. A wonderfully produced show. I can’t wait until he comes back through the DMV.
