INTERVIEW: MAXWELL (Le Monde)

Cela fait près d’une heure et demie que le show a commencé, quand une culotte féminine fait un gracieux vol jusqu’à la scène. Un temps d’arrêt, et Maxwell a un sourire alors qu’enfle dans Madison Square Garden une clameur d’étonnement ravi. On est le 28 septembre, un lundi, pas le meilleur jour pour les concerts, mais la célèbre salle new-yorkaise est remplie à ras bord. Pour Maxwell, pour sa voix soul parmi les plus prenantes, son énergie scénique, son orchestre parfaitement réglé et son grand retour.

Sa tournée nord-américaine, du 17 juin au 23 octobre, a été un triomphe public et critique. Et il enchaîne avec une tournée en Europe, du 28 octobre au 13 novembre. Pour la France, Maxwell sera au Casino de Paris, mardi 3 novembre.

A un moment, il m’a semblé qu’artistiquement, il était important de me mettre en retrait. J’ai médité, lu des livres, vécu une vie “normale”. Les gens ne me reconnaissaient pas. Je pense qu’à un moment on perd son humanité quand on est emporté par cette succession de concerts, de voyages, d’acclamations, même si j’ai toujours fait très attention à ça.”

Et cela depuis ses débuts, à la fin des années 1980, dans des petits clubs new-yorkais, avec ses premières compositions.

Maxwell n’en dit pas plus. “Garder un peu de mystère maintient le désir du public.” Et c’est une manière pour Maxwell de continuer à rester rare.

BLACKsummers’ night will have two successors. The second album is planned for summer 2010, the third in 2011. One is rooted in the gospel, the other one turned to sensual ballads. Maxwell said no more. “Keep a little mystery keeps the public’s desire.” And this is a way for Maxwell to continue to remain scarce.
