ARTICLE: The L.A. Times Adored MAXWELL’s Tribute to Michael Jackson (Los Angeles Times)

los_angeles_times

Below is a quote from The L.A. Times about the airing of the Grammy nominations, last night, December 02, 2009. Mostly, author Ann Powers, was not feeling the program but she enjoyed Maxwell’s performance of Michael Jackson’s “Lady In My Life” and was in full support of him receiving his 6 Grammy nominations.

CRITIC’S NOTEBOOK: A big Grammy nomination: This show has got to go
December 2, 2009 | Ann Powers

Only one moment transcended the ridiculousness. Maxwell’s performance of Michael Jackson’s “The Lady in My Life,” which served as the evening’s requisite MJ tribute, not only stood out, it made a quiet case for itself as one of the best televised musical performances of the year. Deploying his world-class falsetto in front of an understated but wicked-sharp band, the Brooklyn-based soul singer created an oasis of calm within the night’s information overload.

If anyone questions his right to so many Grammy nominations after this performance, they’re simply tone-deaf.

As wonderful a gift as Maxwell gave, it wasn’t enough to justify this hour of prime-time chaos…

I adored it too. Max took that song and made it his own, that’s the mark of a true artiste! Just amazing!

Totally agree, Maxwell’s rendition was done with grace and respect to MJ, while exuding his own style – what a Musical Master..

Kym December 3rd, 2009 at 7:31 pm

LOVED IT !!! LOVED IT !!! LOVED IT !!!

allheavens December 3rd, 2009 at 7:37 pm

PREACH, ANN BABY, PREACH!!!

Max exhibited such musicality, grace and class. MJ would be proud.

My DVR is overheated because I’ve played his performance of “The Lady in My Life” about twenty times today. Guess I’ve got it bad and that ain’t good. *SMH*

I still don’t know how the Grammy Committee can justify not giving Max the nod for “Best Album of the Year”, I suppose we will have to wait for SUMMERS and NIGHT to pull that nomination in.

@STAR,

Yes, we are indeed FORTUNATE to have Max. :-)

NEfan$life December 3rd, 2009 at 7:53 pm

That’s why I love him and his music soooo much! I have played that performance over and over again, sent it to friends to watch and getting ready to watch it now. Peace!

Love you Maxwell!

NEfan$life December 3rd, 2009 at 7:59 pm

Oh, one more thing, I love when Maxwell really starts to feel it and getting into his groove with the shoulder moves. I Love it!!

Arnita Blowe December 3rd, 2009 at 8:23 pm

Listen to when that bass note changes…it’s on when Maxwell’s voice oooos…Seriously…I can’t put it into words…just listen…

NEfan$life December 3rd, 2009 at 8:53 pm

Ok, when he gets to “All over baby” Maxwell looks SEXY as heck. That’s my favorite part.

Maxluv508 December 3rd, 2009 at 8:54 pm

Wow..nice little article..giving my bwoy his props.

soulshadow55 December 3rd, 2009 at 9:00 pm

Wow, when even the word “wow” won’t suffice!! I missed the performance last night. I got in just as he was singing the last 5 notes. I just wanted to die that I had missed him but I knew I’d be able to view the performance here. (Thanks again, Chantay). I’ve watched it seven times already and my heart is so filled with joy and admiration for Max and the band.

Lady In My Life is just the perfect song from MJ’s catalog for Maxwell to sing. It’s Max’s style of music, and with that performance he made the song his own, all the while giving his blessing to MJ. No one else could have done a classier more beautiful rendition than Maxwell. When he did that little scream half way through, I thought my head was going to spin like Linda Blair in the Exorcist! Heather above is so right – his performance only shocked those who didn’t know or believe the talent and effect Maxwell has.

Six Grammy nominations – what can you say but that he deserves that and more. Max has single-handedly carried the torch for soul, R&B what-ever you want to call it. And after so many nominations in the past, he WILL win several this time. Man, I’ve got to go lay down now, my heart is fluttering with excitement!!

Like Arnita said “let the MUSIC do the TALKING. Close your EYES and LISTEN. Open your EYES and FEEL.” Gurl, Maxwell is the TRUTH!!!!!!!! Lord Ham Murcy!!!

Peace and Blessings to you brother Maxwell

To be honest, I was a little nervous when I first heard that Maxwell was going to sing “Lady in my Life” at the Grammy concert because I haven’t really seen anyone perform an MJ song well but I quickly realized that I had nothing to fear. Maxwell sounded amazing and it took my breath away. He put a different twist on the song without taking away from the beauty of it. I loved every minute of it! I am glad that he is getting the recognition and accolades that are coming his way.

Crystal December 3rd, 2009 at 9:50 pm

What ever Maxwell touches, he makes his own, I have always loved the song “Lady in my life” Now I Love it even more, if that’s possible. Maxwell put his soul in that song. It was so beautiful. It had such a calming effect when you heard Max sing the song. It really put me in such a serene mood. MJ would have been proud. Congrats Maxwell on your nominations you deserve them all & then some!!!

FriendsRAngels December 3rd, 2009 at 9:55 pm

Captivatingly BEAUTIFUL performance! Maxwell

Pure enjoyment. Congratulations! The band and you truly SO deserve ALL of these nominations. Blessings & LOVE ♥

nikki December 3rd, 2009 at 10:31 pm

AWESOME
I can tell he’s getting into a song when his right hand starts twitching…he’s got it more under control now…but if you watch his old performances back in the day, you can see it!

You can tell that I am Maxwell OBSESSED!

He is going to get at least ONE of those Grammy’s…I can FEEL it!

soulshadow55 December 3rd, 2009 at 11:41 pm

Hey Nikki, you’ve very observant. When he moves his head to the side and starts to move those fingers it’s all over. He gets lost in whatever he’s singing and the audience gets the benefit of an emotion-filled performance.

Again, Lawd ham murcy – that man is the truth!

lala December 4th, 2009 at 7:07 pm

I love this MJ song people forget how great MJ was as a artist ….and Maxwell singing this well he killed it! Qwan with ya bad self lol!

Just like when he smashed simply beautiful. I think he needs to add this song to his blackSUMMERnight tour…..just putting it out there for the powers that be ;-)

Arnita Blowe December 5th, 2009 at 2:35 am

To Soulshadow55: Thank you for feeling the same way about Maxwell…I saw him on my birthday 11/15/08…missed him when he came back this past September…

I saw those eyes when he as he sang the first few lines of MJ’s song and I was DONE!!! :) Something about those eyes…The rest of him is just as beautiful… :)

He took a beautiful, sensuous love song to the next level while maintaining it’s integrity and quality…

I knew there was something special about him the first time I heard “Acension.”

The chemistry between Maxwell and that amazing band is special…That’s why his music is so…Wow… :)

Star December 5th, 2009 at 3:45 am

It’s becoming borderline obession!!! :) :) :)

Miss Dee December 5th, 2009 at 3:54 am

@ LALA, I feel you! MJ’s death took the breath out of me and Max’s tribute was breath taking as well. He really should try everything in his power to add this song to his upcoming SUMMERS’ Tour set!

lala December 5th, 2009 at 1:05 pm

Miss Dee, we may have to start our own petition to try make that happen. Its for the good of mankind after all :-)

Arnita Blowe December 6th, 2009 at 8:30 pm

To Star…I stopped counting!!! LOL

Nurse Angie December 7th, 2009 at 11:28 am
