INTERVIEW: MAXWELL Speaks to Denise Quan (CNN)

MAXWELL’s first CD in eight years yields six Grammy noms. Denise Quan speaks with the Comeback King of 2009.

December 14, 2009 | Los Angeles, California (CNN) — Once upon a time, Maxwell’s hair would have walked into a room five minutes before he did.

When he first hit the big time in 1996, he rocked the biggest, fluffiest Afro this side of the ’70s and evoked a distinctly bohemian vibe.

Now, the neo-soul superstar is back after an eight-year self-imposed hiatus, and he looks like a new man, with close-cropped hair and a wardrobe of elegantly tailored suits.

“Sometimes I just get sick of myself,” he confided, alluding to his time away from the spotlight. “That’s kind of what happened in 2001. I didn’t want to see another photo; I didn’t want to hear me. I just sort of needed a coffee bean in the perfume shop of who I was, you know what I mean?”

But the deluge of media attention is starting to happen all over again.

We’re backstage at “The Jay Leno Show” in Burbank, California, where the mood is jubilant. The night before, the 36-year-old singer-songwriter earned six Grammy nominations for “BLACKsummer’s Night,” the first in a trilogy of albums rolling out over the next couple of years.

It’s the comeback story of 2009, especially since Whitney Houston’s much-publicized CD failed to garner a single nod from Grammy voters.

Interview requests are pouring in. This time, Maxwell insists that he won’t lose focus.

“I think I was just more afraid. Fear of failing, fear of having something sort of stop. For me, I was like, ‘I don’t want to love this too much, because what if this goes away?’ I kind of went through that because I’m kind of insecure in that way. But for the hiatus to have occurred, to then come back and to have this — I feel a lot more settled and a lot more confident.”

Great interview!!! I just love this man–his spirit, his humbleness, his gentleness, his mystique. Mystique is good–it makes me appreciate him more and more.

On the subject of his hair, I really like it short. I like the transformation because change is good.

I saw his performance of “Lifetime” on the David Letterman show when the “Now” cd was out. There was no emotion in his eyes. He sang the song as if to say “Let me get the hell off of this stage–I’m done. I don’t want to do this anymore.” He just looked sad.

I watched his performance of “Simply Beautiful” on the BET Awards. I screamed during the entire performance because he looked great. I loved his haircut. He was happy.

To continue:

I think that he’s still in shock about the love that has been shown to him since that performance and while he was on tour.

The six Grammy nominations and the AP & Billboard honors are just icing on the cake because they see what his true fans have known since “Acension”–Maxwell is the real deal! :)

The concert playing along with the interview what concert was this??…

Maxwell will have have to come to terms with the fact that his music will live on FOREVER.
There will ALWAYS be someone who will listen to his music for the first time and be moved in the way that thousands before him/her have been moved.
That person will pass it on and so will it continue.
I have no wish for him to disappear again for 8 years, but if that’s what keeps him sane then that’s what he must do.
A Grammy is a formality, MAXWELL has won me over!
He’s so polite when asked the umpteenth time about his ‘fro. People should move on already.
His voice is heavenly, his values are sound, his essence intoxicating = MAXWELL

@peepeebee I think that’s what is so shocking to him, that he did disappear and people are still around.

It shouldn’t be surprising, just like you said, if that’s what keeps him sane, then those who adore his music will understand, period.

“I just sort of needed a coffee bean in the perfume shop of who I was, you know what I mean?” LOL

Nice interview.

@Arnita Blowe
He was sick when he did “Lifetime” on Letterman, hence the “just let me get this over with” vibe. The video is cut short. He sits down while Letterman is informing the audience of the guests coming up during the week, that’s when the audience found out that he was sick.

Over the years I’ve come to realize that Max NEVER cheats his audience, no matter what is going on in his personal life.

@LALA
It’s the concert at Club Nokia on December 2, 2009.

@peepeebee–”…his essence, intoxicating = Maxwell.” :) …WOW… so true.

Love, love love me some Maxwell. His voice, both singing and speaking, his humility, his gentleness, I just adore everything about him. He has such a beautiful spirit. His surprise that people waited for him and still have tremendous love for him and his music is so endearing.

I agree with LMN and peepeebee that if disappearing again keeps him sane and committed, so be it. I know he’ll be back eventually stronger and better than ever.

I’m envious of the live clip of “Get to Know Ya” cuz I didn’t have the opportunity to see the “Arena” version of his tour. He tweeted sumthin about retooling his songs, and I didn’t get to see em live. I saw him in Milwaukee in June before he retooled.

At any rate, I love his genuineness and modesty in not just assuming the world’s gonna LOVE him when he comes back. Anybody know what he meant about being a coffee bean in a perfume shop?

thelatestmaxwellnews December 15th, 2009 at 1:31 am

@rhonda – “coffee bean/perfume shop” Sounds like, he wanted something different out who he was/what he was experiencing, at the time. He simply wanted to be “Max” instead of recording artist “Maxwell”.

Arnita Blowe December 15th, 2009 at 3:15 am

@allheavens–thank you for the info on his Letterman performance. I wasn’t implying anything bad about him. It’s just how he looked to me.

@LALA–videos from the 12/2 concert at Club Nokia are on YouTube. I must have scanned 50+ pages when I found them.

@thelatestmaxwellnews

Some shops use coffee beans to clear their clients noses when sampling different perfumes so their senses won’t become overwhelmed by the different scents.

So you are right in your assessment. He wanted a different experience than the “perfume shop” is life had become. Something a little more real, less overwhelming.

I laughed at that line because most men, even most women today, would not have a clue about “coffee beans and perfume shops”.

allheavens December 15th, 2009 at 9:57 am

Sorry:

“perfume shop” his life had become.

luvsmesommaxwell December 15th, 2009 at 1:32 pm

It’s so nice he’s doing more interviews this time around, just so his die-hard fans can get a slight glimpse into his thoughts. He always presents so humbly and always expresses thnx 2 those supporting him – which of course just increases his sexiness! He also makes sense when he talks about waiting to come back and not just being out there continuosly as some artists tend to do to the point of oversaturation. It was an agonizing wait but what a return…”don’t call it a comeback”. So glad he’s back and it’s great he came back w/ a big BOOM!

FriendsRAngels December 21st, 2009 at 12:01 pm

He uses a super metaphor here: “habituation of the olfactory bulbs”, which occurs when we get to smell several scents after another. The perceived odor intensity of the perfume from sample to sample stays the same after smelling coffee aroma, while it decreases when smelling air between samples. It’s a perfect way to clear the nose, helps to distinguish the latest flavor from the original one and in a way it resets the olfactory bulbs in order to increase sensitivity for the next appraisal.

I would say no worries there Maxwell, the coffee bean trick worked. Not only have You proven to be Xtraordinary, but supplementary able to enhance the essence of a most delicate perfume.

I certainly know why people love him. It’s adoring and at the same time so sweetly moving how women love him so much. The lady in his life who gets Maxwell as her man for the rest of her life and beyond is truly ONE HAPPY & BLESSED LADY and he devotedly deserves the best. Can’t help myself, I simply LOVE YOU Maxwell; please stay just as you are. God’s Blessings 4 You AlwAys. ♥
