10timesthelove

The Latest Maxwell News (2010) presents to you 10 Times the Love, a week long series with all things related to Maxwell and love. If you will, call it a pre-Valentine’s Day celebration. Stay with LMN all week long as we continue to bring you the news with some extra love on the sides. In 10 Times the Love: Lyrically Speaking, we have compiled 10 of Maxwell’s lyrics that set the mood for love (all forms) in it’s purest state.

1.  LET’S NOT PLAY THE GAME (Best Man Soundtrack, 1999)

Lyric:
Entire song

Why We Love It:
All the lyrics speak truth as to how both men and women play games with one another. The title track says it all to me, “Let’s Not Play The Game”. Why put yourself in a position with someone who is not honest with you? In knowing their agenda from the beginning, would you want to date them?

2. GRAVITY: PUSHING TO PULL (Embrya, 1998)

Lyric:
As the moments
Drip like water
I’ll be patient
For my slaughter
As the dawning
Slays the evening
I’ll be waiting, I’ll be…

Why We Love It:
I like the idea of this man wanting to be with this woman as a deliberate act. A conscious choice of choosing this person, this moment and being completely aware of how his senses are driving him.

3. LIFETIME (Now, 2001)

Lyric:
I can let my life pass me by or
I can get down and try
Work it all out this lifetime
Work it all on out this time

Why We Love It:
When you have gotten down to the breaking point but there is a piece of hope telling you to, get back up. Love yourself, first, last, and always or at some point in your life. You have to be the person who makes the decision to change yourself for the better.

4. FISTFUL OF TEARS (BLACKsummers’night, 2009)

Lyric:
We gon’ fight the war, we gon’ fight our fears
The only thing I wanna throw is a fistful of tears

Why We Love It:
Even though the relationship is not going along accordingly, he is still willing to stick around and fight it out. Not at each other but together to make it work.

5. REUNION (Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite, 1996)

Lyric:
So long I’ve searched for you
So long but now it’s true

Girl, it’s our reunion

Why We Love It:
This entire song is very precious and endearing. You have been on the hunt for the one and found them. The love is so good and real, it’s like you have known/loved each other in another life. And you have found each other again, in the present life.

6. LOCK YOU UP N’ LOVE FA DAYS (Ascension: Don’t Ever Wonder – The Tribute, 1996)

Lyric:
You never knew about the others baby
He made you feel his love was real
But now you know that things are not that way
Come go with me baby
If it’s alright with you

Why We Love It:
These words most women want to hear after they have been in a relationship with a loser and have found time to heal from it. But the words are coming from, what seems like, the perspective of the guy that has been watching everything on the sly. Every girl loves a genuine knight in shining armor.

7. GET TO KNOW YA (Now, 2001)

Lyric:
Others were tryin to get in your trousers
I was just tryin to get into you
I was just tryin to get with you, honest
That’s why them boys be scared of you
You never let them get past pajamas
When you find the time, how can I get to know ya

Why We Love It:
A woman’s personality, her mind and her heart are valued more than getting physical with her. For someone to want to take the time to get to know what makes her unique is more valuable than immediately going to bed with her. A woman doesn’t feel objectified but loved for her brain.

8. SOFTLY, SOFTLY (Sweetback) (Sweetback, 1996)

Lyric:
I held your hand and I was born

Why We Love It:
If this were a line…what a pick up it would be! Someone, maybe so mesmerizing to make you want to be born again?!
Please let me know what type of lotion you are using on your hands because I want that affect on someone!

9. PLAYING POSSUM (BLACKsummers’night, 2009)

Lyric:
Come back from the dead
You left my, my heart here

Why We Love It:
Here is a guy who is asking for love to reveal itself again. Even though the situation seems sad, like a love is being played with, it takes coming from a place deep down in your heart to put your feelings out in the open. Especially, when you think someone could possibly be playing around.

10. EACHHOUREACHSECONDEACHMINUTEEACHDAY: Of My Life (Embrya, 1998)

Lyric:
Do me till I’m done, do me till I’m done
Do me till I’m done, till comes up the sun
Moon goes where it’s from, till the morning comes
Sideways, upside down, ceiling or the ground
Till my lost is found
Each Hour Each Second Each Minute Each Day of my life baby

Why We Love It:
This song rings a familiar tune, similar to Stop the World. Each and every moment in time, I want pieces of you and me to come together in love until we both drive one another into a frenzy.

Maxwell is the epitome of sensuousness. He is a true artist to be able to paint a picture and make us feel how much he longs for that special woman and make us feel like we should be desired that same way. Words simply can’t express how deep his lyrics touch me. Thanks LMN for reminding us just how special Maxwell is, especially during the month of love!

Everwanting

Minus my negative
changed what I thought I wld never
Spoke a Kiss-verbal bliss
and I was made a mo better

the evocation and celebration of love through its awakening and ameliorative powers. The corpereal potentency that can be manifested through the metaphysical.

I agree with #8, although I love the first lines: “Steamy like a winter storm/softer than the sharpest thorn…” Lyrics like that make you feel what he’s feeling–the mark of a true poet.

Yes, Maxwell is a lyrical genius!!! “He got the Gift of Gab” is how we say it in NY!!!

DROWNDEEPHULA

“Hula, Hula Baby, Baby….”

Personal Favorite: Whenever Wherever Whatever
I love the beautiful lyrics and the acoustic sound. Especially during a live performance.

Whenever Wherever Whatever

Wish I knew if I could
Be the one that you would
Love forever n’ a day baby (Oh yeah)
And if there’s a thing that you need
For you n’ your blood I would bleed
N’ if ever you yearn for the love in me
Whenever Wherever Whatever
Baby
Whenever Wherever Whatever
Ba ba baby

What a gift!

DROWNDEEPHULA

Let’s drowndeep in us
Make no fight nor fuss
Go drowndeep in us
In us…In us…In us…In us…

I played this song for hours last night…

It gave/gives me chills…

les February 12th, 2010 at 1:59 am

WOW – great piece…he truly is a very gifted poet :)

Carla February 12th, 2010 at 12:13 pm

Thanks for compiling and breaking the lyrics down. I am so ready to go into my archive and revisit some of these tunes just to dig deeper into the lyrics. Max is a lyrical genius. I realized that the first time I heard “Fist Full of Tears and Possum Playing” and cried during both.

1. Exactly!… Step to me with INTEGRITY, or Let’s Not Play The Game! (I LOVEEEEEEE M’s LYRICS, as they always come at you with TRUTH! Reminds me of a Scripture that uses the analogy of a lamp to describe TRUTH. (I’m paraphrasing) A LAMP to your feet and a LIGHT to your PATH!… :)

2. I recently purchased “Embrya” and intentionally haven’t heard all the tracks yet, but can definitely relate to this! I can’t wait to LISTEN to the rest of this cd over the weekend!… :)

3. Exactly!… Been there and done that!

4. Yes! Been there and done that too!

5. OMG!.. YES!!!… :)

6. I’ve only heard this once and I believe it was recently on LMN or My Space. LOVE those lyrics! Was this tribute ever released? Is it available for purchase?

7. Exactly! M DEFINITELY UNDERSTANDS WOMEN! That’s why WE ALL LOVEEEEEEE AND WANT HIM!… :) :) :)

8. Haven’t heard this yet… Has this been released and if so where can I purchase it? (Absolutely feel those lyrics!)

9. M’s SO-OOO ON POINT! Is there any question as to why we relate to HIS MUSIC?!

10. OMG!…. YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!… :)

P.S. M’s lyrics are the bait, them vocals,
the hook!! And then there’s the MUSIC!
OMG!!!… :) :) :)

LOVE this LMN!……………………. :)

@STAR: Embrya is my favorite Maxwell cd with BLACKsummersnight a close 2nd…I’m glad that people are finally getting into it…When I have a hard time falling asleep or if I’m feeling stressed, I play the (Embrya) cd from the 5th song until the end…His voice calms me down and I hum/sing the songs until I fall asleep… A perfect lullaby… :-)

Arnita Blowe February 13th, 2010 at 4:10 pm

@STAR: You should really check out “Know These Things: Shouldn’t You”…People assume they know so much about him…I like the lines “Whisper you know these things…Show me you know these things…Tell me you know these things…about me…” Great song!!! :-)

A great writer is able to keep the reader engaged from start to finish. Maxwell’s music reminds me of a series of great books, each song is like a chapter. Every word from every chapter sparks your interest and leads you to the next word. What I’ve always liked about Maxwell’s songwriting is the beautiful and magnetic words he uses to express his thoughts. I’ve found that when an author pens a great book it never reads the same way twice and when an artist pens a great song I never hear it the same way twice. What a gift he has!

@Decymba: what else to add my dear? You beautifully said it all……..! great comment for a great feature!
