Maxwell and Jill Scott
(Staples Center, L.A.; 18,000 seats; $252 top)
By ANDREW BARKER

Midway through his lubricious 90-minute set at the sold-out Staples Center on Saturday night, neo-soul troubadour Maxwell momentarily silenced the feminine squeals that had been raging throughout the show, and addressed the men in attendance on the intended function of his music: “I’m just the appetizer,” he told them, implying that they were responsible for providing their dates with the main course afterward.

Such was the brazenly babymaking design of the night, and even if some of the man’s musicianship was lost in all the seduction, he certainly accomplished what he set out to do. READ MORE

How did the Staple Center compare to the Hollywood Bowl? Could Maxwell & the Band come out into the crowd? Somebody said the Staples Center was sold out.

The Staples Center was great for this show. He definitely tried to go out into the crowd, but with no success really. And, no Staples was NOT Sold Out. In my section where I was sitting, there were hundreds of empty seats! Sad, really. There were empty seats all over the arena. However, it was an amazing show! and Maxwell said it best at the end of the show, “Real Music is still alive!!!”

I have tickets for the show in Philly on the 19th, I’m going there to see him and Jill Scott, because Jill will not be with him when he hits Baltimore 7/15.

After reading the tweets, it looks like Black Hollywood royalty came out to see Max. Halle, Magic, and Eddie were there. Holly Robinson was there as well. He sure pulls in the celebs. Good for him. I’m sure NYC will be crazier.

I understand it was a wonderful place to be with Jill and all. Maxwell always puts on a great show and the people love it. I can’t wait until the new CD comes out. I did hear that all of Hollywood was there, but then again where else would they be. It was the best ticket in town! Terry Ellis of EnVogue, Anthony Anderson, and many more.

The show was great. Jill Scott and Max handled their business. They worked hard for the money. Maxwell even said it was sold out. When he had them to shine the lights on the whole center, I looked all around, as far as my eyes can see, from the sides, front and back, that place was packed. I wasn’t able to see all of the nose-bleed section. He said good thing he didn’t see that when he first came on because that it would have made him nervous. :)

My gosh!
Maxwell and Jilly really pulled in!

Halle, Eddie, Anthony Anderson…I can’t say I’m surprised though.

I cannot wait until June 25th.

Does Maxwell usually perform last?

SUNG June 16th, 2010 at 12:40 am

Nickie. In this case, Maxwell is the headliner so yes, he performs last. Someone else will open for him. But don’t be late. He has top talent on the tour.
