POLL: How Do You Prefer to See Maxwell (in concert)?

staplescenter2010

Over the past couple of years, Maxwell has played in many different venues of various sizes, 2,000+-seat venues to 20,000+-seat venues and everything in between. And his adoring admirers have given out-of-pocket no matter the size of the venue. Given the intimacy his music invokes and his performance style, how do you prefer to see Maxwell in concert?

I prefer smaller venues. It feels more intimate, and you have a better chance of seeing him up close. I was at the 6-18 show at the Verizon Center in DC and I shelled out extra $ for floor seats, but I may as well have been watching him on youtube. :-(

SUNG July 19th, 2010 at 6:07 pm

Some place that at least allows for fans to get closer. I checked out the capacity of the Hollywood Bowl vs. Staple Center and they are about the same. The Hollywood Bowl seems to allow for more interaction w/guest then the Staple Center.

Looking at it from his view, the more people the better, I guess. From my view, I prefer the smaller intimate venues. I have paid a lot more but it was worth every penny to see him so close

luckystar19335 July 19th, 2010 at 10:13 pm

I couldn’t afford to see him this year so I was better off watching him on youtube. I understand that his star level is up after winning grammys and stuff but he can mix it up by doing both arenas and theaters. Maxwell please don’t forget your most intimate fans…

luvmesommaxwell July 19th, 2010 at 10:20 pm

I agree with the other comments (ladies?). It increases my chance of getting closer to him in a smaller venue. Hope Maxi is reading this! lol While I’m happy for him that BSN tours are doing well in the big venues (mo $$$, mo $$$, mo $$$ – tho he has eschewed doing it for the $$$), I wuld hazard a guess that his true fans like him up close and personal.

Keliwel July 19th, 2010 at 10:27 pm

I’ve only seen Maxwell in the larger venue, and I think he carries the arena very, very well. The problem with having him at a smaller venue is that tickets would be IMPOSSIBLE to get b/c he’s so popular. He’d also have to stay at each city for @ a week to allow all fans an opportunity to see him. That seems like a lot to ask of an artist. Thanks for keeping the world of Maxwell fans going!

Lashea01 July 20th, 2010 at 1:49 am

Small..the closer the better (wink)

Tina July 20th, 2010 at 2:51 am

I think the larger venues could work if he continued to use the Y-shaped catwalk like he did at the 2009 arena shows. The fans loved it! It gave those who weren’t sitting close a better view of him. But no matter where he chooses to perform I just hope he does a meet-n-greet. I would love to say hello and have him sign my copy of BSN. I know it would cost more but it sure would be worth it!!!

Ciderkiss July 20th, 2010 at 3:09 am

I prefer to see him naked in a small venue :D

thelatestmaxwellnews July 20th, 2010 at 8:21 am

@Ciderkiss – that probably won’t happen this lifetime.

Christine July 20th, 2010 at 12:43 pm

I’ve seen Maxwell in both small and large venues. I think I want to say I prefer him in a smaller venue, it just seems less exhausting lol. Perhaps he can go back and forth between the two; an arena tour and then an intimate tour, that way he pleases both groups wanting to see him in either,or and it mixes things up for him as well.

Kym July 20th, 2010 at 1:51 pm

This is a good question. I’ve only had the opportunity to see Maxwell at Madison Square Garden, twice this year and once last year. Last year, he had the Y shape stage but I was so far from it,it didn’t matter. Then this year when he didn’t have it I was disappointed for the first show, but for the second show I was so close I really enjoyed it.

However, I think it’s about safety first for our beloved Maxwell. Most women get so excited they wanna pull him off the stage. I also agree with “Keliwel” if he does smaller venues that means less people get to see him, and shows will be sold out so quick, and I don’t want that. @ Ciderkiss, hey a girl can dream can’t she :)
Thanks LMN

The results of this poll are pretty persuasive. I went to two Maxwell concerts in DC, one in the DAR Constitution Hall and the Verizon center. They were both great shows, but the one at Constituion Hall was amazing!

Mrs.Robinson July 20th, 2010 at 4:16 pm

This year was my first Maxwell/Jill Scott concert and I have vowed to never miss another one. Small or Large venue I will be there.

lindat July 20th, 2010 at 5:50 pm

@Christine & Keliwel, I totally agree with ya’ll. Maybe he can mix it up a little. I’ve seen him at small and large venues. The small venues would wear the poor man out because he would have to perform at least 3-4 times in a row at that venue so that most people can see him during his visit at any designated city.

Then the larger venues seem to always have problems with the sound system where the musical instruments overpower his voice. :( But I’m cool wherever he performs.

Helen July 20th, 2010 at 5:52 pm

I loved the Y-shaped catwalk stage from 2009. I was close enough to make eye-contact at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. I want Max to reap the benefits of his success and the larger venues mean more revenue! Might I make a suggestion? MEET AND GREETS @ every show! I will shell out $$$$$$ to meet Max! But I think the smaller venues are out like Max’s “fro”; R.I.P!!!!!!

Monica July 21st, 2010 at 9:28 am

I prefer my room, but that’s probably not gonna happen. :) Anywho, I know this is off subject, but does anyone know if he’s dating that Selita chick. She’s that model that used to date Nick Cannon. I saw them together at a restaurant on some blog and he looked mighty happy! He know he loves him some models!

NiN July 21st, 2010 at 10:36 am

I totally agree with “Ciderkiss”, I prefer but Naked in a small venue!!! Lov U Maxwell!!!

luckystar19335 July 21st, 2010 at 11:13 am

@ Monica, I know that’s right! I saw that picture too..I’m not sure if they are dating because there was a rumor last month that Selita was dating baseball player Ryan Howard..idk

Re: POLL: How Do You Prefer to See Maxwell
(in concert)?

I personally prefer smaller venue’s… I want “M” UP CLOSE & PERSONAL! (However, I won’t be selfish, I don’t eva want 2 take away from him makin’paper, in the larger arena’s he’s accustomed to.) If at all possible it would be nice if he could do a little of both! In any case I’ve decided that for future tours… I’M PURCHASING FRONT ROW SEATS and/or VIP TICKETS!!!”

The Y-shaped stage seems to be a PERFECT fit for larger or smaller venue’s!

P.S. Thanks “LMN” for always taking our thoughts into consideration. LOVE to you and M! We too desire what is mutually beneficial! – When WE THE LADIES are HAPPY then everybody’s HAPPY!- (And primarily Maxwell!) :) :) :)

graceproud July 24th, 2010 at 12:01 am

I have seen Mr. Maximum five times since 1999, and the smaller the venue the better. He was great at Radio City, I was in orchestra, but too far back which wasn’t so great, but the show itself was absolutely fantastic. I would love, love to see him at a small intimate venue like “the blue note or bb kings, but I know those venues are too small. A girl could wish and dream though! Love Maximus soooo much. Thanks for the question LMN.

Sharon July 24th, 2010 at 12:05 pm

I prefer the smaller venue because the sound quality is so much better, but I understand that Max can’t really do these anymore. There are just too many people that want to see him. I wish the promoters would reduce the price of the tickets, but I doubt that will happen after so many venues were sold out on the last tour.

lisabentley83 July 24th, 2010 at 1:07 pm

I would see Maxwell absolutely ANYWHERE!! He is my favourite singer, such a gorgeous talented gentleman, love his voice. I wish he would duet more, especially supporting up and coming artists like kelly Erez who is doing similar music. They would go so well together and it would be so inspiring for him to mentor UK talent instead of all this crap x factor rubbish…look at http://www.kellyerez.com and tell me if you agree.

stephanie July 24th, 2010 at 5:33 pm

No venue would be small enough for me. Okay maybe him giving me a private concert would do it but that’s not going to happen. LOL. Whether he’s at DAR Consitution Hall or Verizon Center in D.C. I’d still want to be front row center. The problem for him is when he does the smaller venue in D.C. (DAR) he has to do multiple shows (typically 3) to keep pace with the demand. It’s in his vocal chords’ best interest to limit the amount of shows to keep him from losing his voice which almost happened while he was on tour last year. In that case, I don’t blame him for doing the larger venues. I’ll be there regardless. Love you Max! :-)

I know folks are saying that if he sticks to smaller venues they will sell out too quickly but I dont think that is actually true. Maxwell is still a pretty niche artist and isnt selling out stadiums like U2 or something. Even with Jill Scott, his shows were not selling out the large venues they booked last tour. Some yes, all-no. I know folks who were moved down to better seats to fill lower bowl at some of those shows.

There is nothing wrong with doing smaller venues, and in fact, it makes more sense for an artist like Maxwell. Sure there are some places like DC where he can pull a bigger audience and play night after night to sold out crowds, but those are rather rare.

Suzanne July 25th, 2010 at 2:00 pm

Well, Maxwell was with Selita at Russell Simon’s charity event yesterday: http://photos.essence.com/galleries/star_gazing_72010#468551

I’ve been lucky. I’ve seen him in small venues a few times, like the Paramount in Oakland CA (3100 seats) and at large venues like The Hollywood Bowl (10K plus). Max and his amazing band can do no wrong in either size. I am a stickler for quality sound, and my ears enjoyed the sound at a smaller venue. The music business is experiencing challenging times. Musicians/ Artists make their money touring. Max & their band have paid their dues and deserve to cash in on their success-do both. Perhaps, when the album first drops, do the first leg in smaller venues. As album sales increase, do the second leg in a bigger venue. We all win. I was way broke during the 2nd leg this time. Jill Scott rocks. I wish to win the lottery and see you guys in Europe. One can dream.

Be it a large or small venue if you have had the opportunity to experience Maxwell live you will have to agree that he is very good at drawing his audience in and interacting with them. His stage presence and audience awareness is on point to say the least!!!!. The bounus of experiencing all this in a smaller venue is that this contact is greatly intensified to he point where (speaking for myself). I actually felt Maxwell was singing, looking and talking directly to me which made my experience all the more special and inturn I am sure that Maxwell taps directly into the pure unadulterated and might I add “RESPECTFUL” gratitude that he receives right back from his audience which has him buzzin also.
