AMFAR | Founded in 1985, amfAR is dedicated to ending the global AIDS epidemic through innovative research. With the freedom and flexibility to respond quickly to emerging areas of scientific promise, amfAR plays a catalytic role in accelerating the pace of HIV/AIDS research and achieving real breakthroughs. amfAR-funded research has increased our understanding of HIV and has helped lay the groundwork for major advances in the study and treatment of HIV/AIDS. SUSAN G. KOMEN | SUSAN G. KOMEN for the CURE Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer with her heart, body and soul. Throughout her diagnosis, treatments, and endless days in the hospital, she spent her time thinking of ways to make life better for other women battling breast cancer instead of worrying about her own situation. That concern for others continued even as Susan neared the end of her fight. Moved by Susan’s compassion for others and committed to making a difference, Nancy G. TAIA PEACE | Taia Peace Foundation (“Taia Peace”), the charitable arm of Taia, LLC, was formed in 2007 with a focus on Sierra Leone and with a single aim: to assist rural communities in overcoming the so-called “resource curse.” From Angola to Zimbabwe, Ghana to Guinea, Liberia to the DRC, Africa is rich in natural resources, yet largely absent is economic development of a level commensurate with what that resource potential might suggest. This disparity helps spawn hot zones of economic instability and social tension, the breeding ground for tragic episodes like the Sierra Leone Civil War of 1991- 2002. The seed for the creation of Taia Peace germinated near the Taia river in central Sierra Leone, but our hope is to work at the behest of communities across Africa as they endeavor to remove the economic barriers that limit their capacity to build a lasting peace.
